What is the Criminal Justice program?

Department of Criminal Justice. Law Enforcement and Correctional Science. For students seeking careers in law enforcement, the courts, or corrections.

What will I learn?

Courses are designed to provide knowledge and techniques for understanding how criminal justice and social structures influence human behavior. With an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, students will have 60 credit hours of college to either continue their education at a four-year university or to enter any public safety agency at the federal, state, and local levels.

What can I do with this course of study?

Criminal Justice careers can encompass a variety of jobs. Qualified graduates seek employment in law enforcement at the Federal, State, and local level, State and Federal Court Systems, Law Firms, Adult and Juvenile Correctional Facilities, Community Correctional Programs, Child Advocacy, Protective Services, Private Sector, and other service agencies.

What's special about the program?

Students are exposed to different professions in the criminal justice system, as well as professionals in the field of criminal justice. The classes are no more than 32 students which allow for excellent student-faculty interaction. The Criminal Justice program offers courses on-campus and online. Complete your education when you can, where you can. The curriculum has been approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement, Peace Officer Option, A.A.S.:

1) Anyone who has attended and completed a Texas Police Academy can be given up to 20 semester hours of credit, if pursuing this degree. Evidence [copy of Texas Commission On Law Enforcement (TCOLE) peace officer license if peace officer, or certificate for non-peace officers] of completion is required.

2) Active, commissioned police officers (not detention officers) can have the tuition exempted/waived under Texas Senate Bill 1210. Active peace officers must provide a department letter (from a supervisor or Human Resources) disclosing that they are active police officers to take advantage of this.

Credit for Prior Learning

Students who are active/licensed Texas Peace Officers (who completed a TCOLE-certified Peace Officer Program) will receive credit for the 4 CJLE Basic Peace Officer courses (20 hours total) upon completion of 6 hours of criminal justice credits at SAC from the following choices: CRIJ 1310, CRIJ 1306 or CRIJ 1307. The SAC CJLE Basic Peace Officer courses given credit are:

a. CJLE 1506 - Basic Peace Officer I
b. CJLE 1512 - Basic Peace Officer II
c. CJLE 1518 - Basic Peace Officer III
d. CJLE 1524 - Basic Peace Officer IV

Justification for awarding this credit for prior learning is based on the standards established for Peace officer courses credential by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement at www.tcole.texas.gov/content/training-requirements.
